XFN Exclusive: Professor Anne Simon Explains it All – Part 2

Anneandchrisrevivalsmall

This is a continuation of our exclusive interview with Anne Simon, The X-Files science advisor. The first part was posted on Friday, Aug. 21st and can be found Here.

REAL REALITY VS. DRAMATIC REALITY

Telling a story is not always a documentary event. To play with the dramatic moments of a fictional narrative and evoke the emotions needed to effectively communicate that drama, you can’t always stick strictly to the black and white facts. So, is it okay to manipulate the facts to the point where the science won’t be as accurate for the sake of telling a story?

“As a scientist watching any show, watching The X-Files, does that bother you?” I ask.

“That happens a lot. You know, I can come up with all of the science and Chris will say, ‘Well, you know it’s not visual enough. We need something more visual.’ So you come up with something that’s more visual but maybe now not completely accurate.” And then Anne takes on a subject that has been the center of so many discussions in the fandom over the years.

“There was the episode where Scully did that whole Southern blot.” You can tell that Simon has received her fair share of criticism over this scientific scene in the show. “You know, she wanted to see if she was infected by this alien virus and she had to do the entire experiment. So Chris had me come up with how can she figure out she’s been infected by the alien organism. And I said, “Well can we make it a virus, because I’m a virologist?”

XFN Exclusive: Professor Anne Simon Explains it All – Part I

AnneTwitterTalking to Anne Simon is really easy, even though I’m always aware of how amazingly intelligent and wise she is, and how… I’m not really the scientific kind, but I try. The resident Science Advisor for The X-Files and current professor at the University of Maryland, is also a virologist and the author of the book The Real Science Behind The X-Files. She has been recently reaching out to fans via Twitter, bridging the gap and bringing answers to so many questions that have plagued us over the years.

Perhaps one of the things I really appreciated the most about our conversation was just how very excited she is to share the knowledge, her constant curiosity and just how personable she is. Her involvement with the show goes back to the very first years of The X-Files, and she shared the story amidst a few candid laughs.

XFN Exclusive: The X-Files Board Game Contest

This is a contest for the True X-Phile!

As you know, The X-Files Board Game is finally amongst us. The folks at IDW Games have been hard at work on this puppy for quite some time and they have given us a set to give away to a worthy fan.

Now, this is a contest that will be challenging. We want to put those profiling and investigative minds at work; you like The X-Files, right? Well, you must surely have some FBI skills of your own.

Here is the premise of the contest

Through all of our pages you will find five different cards, one on each XFN page. The following is an actual game piece:

 website

You can find the rest of the game pieces at our Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and Instagram – Collect all of them!

The combination of the five cards will reveal a single quote from the show. We have broken down the complete quote in five parts; there’s one card to a portion of the quote. Each card, by itself, deciphers a single portion. When you combine all five phrases that you figure out from each card, you will have the complete quote. Simple enough, huh?

How to get the hidden messages:

Look at each card as a single entity. Try to figure out the message through the clues in the picture. You should be able to figure out a sentence per card. If you get stuck with one card, move on to the next, they’re not in any particular order.

Think about what the figures mean, what that iconic picture reminds you of, open your mind to abstract thinking.

Once you figure out one card, we’re pretty sure that the solution of the rest of the cards will be very easy for you! The quote is from an episode of the The X-Files, not an interview, or outtake; it’s a line of dialogue said by one of the actors on screen. It can be from any of the seasons, or either of the two movies.

How to submit your answer:

Send your answer to XFN1013@gmail.com – you have until Sunday, February 8th, 2015 at 11:59PM PST to turn them in. Final winner will be announced the week after. The contest is open to submissions worldwide. In case there’s more than one correct entry, valid answers will be entered into an automated raffle to select the final winner. ONLY CORRECT ANSWERS WILL BE IN THIS RAFFLE.

If you have any questions about the game, shoot us an email to XFN1013@gmail.com with the Subject: GIMME A CLUE – and we’ll address any confusion you may have.

The clues are out there, you just have to know where to look.

XFN Exclusive: Jonathan Maberry on The X-Files: Trust No One

X-files-cover-draftIt’s been a great year for fans of The X-Files and 2015 is shaping up to be an even better one. The Season 10 comics have been a smashing success and continue to roll on, Year Zero was fantastic and introduced us to two great new characters, the board game has finally been released, and now there are rumblings of an #XFilesRevival in the works.

Could a Phile ask for anything more? Well of course they could! We are a demanding bunch of fans, after all. And so in April, IDW Publishing plans to deliver what promises to be a great addition to any X-Files collection.

Now available for pre-sale, The X-Files: Trust No One is shaping up to be a must-read for Philes looking for their next Mulder and Scully fix. Volume one features authors such as Kevin J. Anderson, Tim Lebbon, and Brian Keene, and is the first of three volumes currently planned. The collected stories will take place before, during, and up until the beginning of the Season 10 storyline, keeping in canon with the television series.

Knowing that the truth was out there, we asked New York Times Bestseller, Bram Stoker Award-winner, and editor of The X-files: Trust no One, Jonathan Maberry, what he could tell us about the upcoming anthology. Justin Eisinger, Senior Editor for Books at IDW also jumped in to answer one of our questions.

Hit the jump for our Q&A with Jonathan Maberry.

‘X-Files’ Revival Headed Our Way?

If you’ve been on the internet at all today, you’ve probably heard the news. Fox television is in talks to bring back The X-Files, but there’s been a lot of speculation as to what that means. The word reboot has gone around and that can be a little frightening without details. We’re working to get more information. In the meantime, here’s everything we’ve heard so far.

From the TCA Winter Press Tour, we know now that Fox has been in talks with Chris Carter to return The X-Files and Mulder and Scully to our television screens for a potential revival. This would be more like Fox’s 24: Live Another Day miniseries than an actual show reboot. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson would be returning to reprise their roles as our two favorite FBI agents. What will this entail? When will it happen? Will it happen? Well, we don’t know those answers yet.

However, this is very good news. Fox hasn’t come out and talked about continuing The X-Files franchise like this since I Want to Believe in 2008. Fox TV Group Chairman and CEO Gary Newman is “hopeful” about the outcome of the talks. Chairman and CEO Dana Walden said, “Gary and I both worked [at 20th Century Fox Television] through the entire run of The X Files. It was a great experience. We’ve maintained good relationships with Chris, David and Gillian.”

While we wait for more details, you should all be very proud as a fandom because for the last seven years you have been telling Fox that you want more Mulder and Scully. And that may very well be happening. We want to believe.

UPDATE:IGN is reporting that Dana Walden at Fox confirms a revival would not move forward without series creator Chris Carter.

The Toronto Sun has a great article that talks more about the motivations of Newman and Walden as new heads of Fox Broadcasting.

XFN Exclusive: W.B. Davis & Ilyas Kaduji on “Abduct”

If you thought that you’d seen it all in the world of the unexplained, you’d better think again. Abduct, a new movie starring William B. Davis and directed by Ilyas Kaduji, promises to bring a new take into the world of supernatural stories and more.

The movie, still in post-production, is a fictional, supernatural, horror thriller set in Texas. The story is based on Crystal, a mysterious Texas orphan with a horrible and tragic history. Her parents ritually abuse her. One night, strange lights and sounds appear outside their home. Crystal blacks out and awakens to find them murdered. The girl is haunted by their deaths. Years pass. Now a young adult, Crystal flees her orphanage in a paranoid belief that otherworldly forces are after her, a supernatural terror that has stalked her since childhood and that follows her no matter where she flees.

Meanwhile, charismatic paranormal radio host Ridley Kay, is passionate about exploring the nature of phenomena like this. For some paranoid groups, the fate of the Earth depends on humanity exposing occult secrets to the light: UFO’s and alien abductions, demons and spirit possession, the Shadow People and sleep paralysis, government conspiracy, mind control, and time travel. These dark subjects plague thousands of people across the world. For Kay it’s all fun and games until Crystal enters his life.

People get hurt as mysterious government agents seek to take Crystal into custody. No matter how far the young woman flees, sinister people in black hunt her… but why?
